HISTORY, GARDENS AND INLAND SEA
WHY GO
Powerful memory, quiet old towns and islands scattered across blue water.
Western Honshu brings together Hiroshima’s modern history, Miyajima’s sacred landscape, Okayama’s gardens and the slower towns facing the Sea of Japan. It is an easy extension from Kansai but deserves more than a single day.
The Sanyo Shinkansen makes the southern corridor straightforward. Travel slows toward Shimane and Tottori, where gardens, dunes, shrines and castle towns reward overnight stays and a more deliberate pace.

Hiroshima · Okayama stations
The Sanyo Shinkansen links Shin-Osaka, Okayama and Hiroshima. Local trains and ferries cover Miyajima and many Setouchi stops. The San’in side has fewer fast connections, so build in time or consider a car for rural sections.
| From | To | Typical time | Best route | Planning note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Shin-Osaka | Hiroshima | About 1 hr 20 min | Sanyo Shinkansen | The fastest extension from Kansai. |
