Tokai sits on Japan’s main east–west route, yet its best experiences begin when you step away from the Shinkansen. Fuji viewpoints, the Izu Peninsula, Nagoya’s food culture and Gifu’s mountain towns all reward a focused detour.
The region is geographically varied, so choose a theme rather than joining every highlight. Pair Tokyo with Fuji and Izu, or use Nagoya as the gateway to Takayama, Shirakawa-go and traditional craft communities.

Nagoya · Shizuoka · Mishima stations
Tokaido Shinkansen stations such as Mishima, Shizuoka and Nagoya provide fast gateways. Highway buses are often useful for Fuji Five Lakes, Takayama and Shirakawa-go. Mountain connections take longer than straight-line distances suggest, especially in winter.
