EDITORIAL DECISION

The choice, before the detail.

VERDICTDefine CDW, NOC, deductibles and roadside assistance before accepting a package called full cover.
BEST FOR

Independent travellers comparing total time, cost and transfers rather than one headline fare.

SKIP IF

You prefer a fully arranged route and do not want to compare operating conditions.

CHECK BEFORE BOOKING

Recheck live schedules, luggage rules, licence requirements and the final dated price before travel.

The most confusing part of a Japanese rental quote is often not collision cover but the separate non-operation charge that may apply while a damaged vehicle is unavailable.

TL;DR: Confirm the base liability cover, collision damage waiver, deductible, non-operation charge protection, roadside assistance and exclusions. “Full cover” is not useful wording unless every item is defined.

02Photograph the handover

Record every side of the car, wheels, windscreen, fuel level and dashboard. Ask staff to mark existing damage. Keep the rental office and roadside telephone numbers offline.

03Common exclusions

Coverage may be affected by unregistered drivers, prohibited roads, poor reporting, drink driving or using the wrong licence documents. Winter equipment is a safety requirement, not a substitute for insurance.

Official driving context: JNTO driving in Japan.

Is CDW the same as full insurance?
