TL;DR — For the classic Tokyo–Kyoto–Osaka route, no. Individual tickets for that loop cost around ¥29,500; the 7-day JR Pass costs ¥50,000. The pass only pays off when you add serious distance — Hiroshima, Kanazawa, Kyushu or multiple long day trips — inside seven days. Regional passes beat it for most other plans.

A 7-day pass needs about ¥50,000 of JR travel in 7 days — roughly ¥7,100 per day — to break even.

Rule of thumb: one Tokyo–Kyoto round trip (~¥28,000) is not enough. You need that round trip plus a third distant city or several shinkansen day trips.

- Kansai + Hiroshima: JR West's Kansai–Hiroshima Area Pass (~¥17,000, 5 days) covers Osaka–Hiroshima–Miyajima ferry for a third of the national pass price.
- Tokyo + Kanazawa + Kansai arc: Hokuriku Arch Pass (~¥24,500, 7 days) links Tokyo–Kanazawa–Osaka one way.
- Day trips from Tokyo: the private-railway passes (Hakone Free Pass, Nikko Pass) cover what the JR Pass doesn't.
- Slow travelers: if you stay 4+ nights per city, no pass beats point-to-point tickets.
04How to buy and use it
Buy via the official JR site or licensed agents before or after arrival (agent prices currently match; the October 2026 rise affects agents first). Activate at a JR exchange office with your passport — the pass requires temporary visitor status. Seat reservations are free with the pass; make them at machines or online, especially for Friday/Sunday evening trains.

Is the JR Pass worth it for Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka only?
No. That route costs about ¥29,500 in individual tickets against ¥50,000 for the 7-day pass. Buy point-to-point shinkansen tickets, or use the pass only if you extend to Hiroshima, Kanazawa or beyond within the same week.
Does the JR Pass cover the Nozomi shinkansen?
Not for free — Nozomi and Mizuho require a paid supplement on top of the pass. Hikari and Sakura trains, covered in full, run the same Tokyo–Kyoto–Hiroshima corridors about 15–20 minutes slower per leg.
Does the JR Pass cover Tokyo's metro, Hakone or Nikko?
It covers JR lines only: the Yamanote loop yes, Tokyo Metro no. Hakone's Odakyu line and Nikko's Tobu line are private railways with their own better-value passes.
When does the JR Pass price increase?
Overseas sales channels are scheduled to move the 7-day ordinary pass from ¥50,000 to ¥53,000 on 1 October 2026. Passes purchased before the change at the old price remain valid per their issued terms.
Should I get the 14-day pass?
Only for genuinely long arcs — e.g., Tokyo → Kanazawa → Kyoto → Hiroshima → Kyushu — averaging ¥5,700+ of JR travel daily for two weeks. Most 14-day trips do better with one 7-day pass placed over the travel-heavy week.
Can I use the JR Pass for the Miyajima ferry and Narita Express?
Yes to both — the JR-operated Miyajima ferry (visitor tax excluded) and the Narita Express into Tokyo are covered, which helps the break-even math on Hiroshima-bound itineraries.
