An eSIM is the simplest way for most visitors to get mobile data in Japan, but the best plan is the one that matches your phone, trip length and real data use. Coverage, activation rules and throttling matter more than the largest number in the package name.
TL;DR: Choose a Japan-wide data eSIM for one unlocked compatible phone. For a typical 7–10 day trip, 5–10GB is enough for maps, messaging, translation and light social use. Install before departure when permitted, but follow the provider’s activation timing exactly.
01The short answer: which eSIM should you choose?
Choose a plan that clearly states the Japanese network, validity period, total or daily data allowance, hotspot policy and what happens after the allowance is used. A cheaper plan is not useful if it starts counting days before arrival or cannot be reinstalled after deletion.

02Check compatibility before buying
Your phone must support eSIM and be carrier-unlocked. Dial *#06#; many compatible phones display an EID. Also check the device settings for an “Add eSIM” or “Add cellular plan” option. Regional versions of the same phone can differ.
Data-only eSIMs normally do not include a Japanese phone number, voice calls or SMS. That is acceptable for maps, messaging and digital tickets, but some restaurant or delivery services ask for a local number.

04Install it without losing the QR code
- Save the QR code and manual activation details offline.
- Connect to stable Wi-Fi before installation.
- Label the new line “Japan.”
- Keep your home line enabled for calls only if needed, but disable its data roaming.
- Select the Japan eSIM for cellular data.
- Enable data roaming only when the eSIM provider instructs you to.
Do not delete the eSIM while troubleshooting. Many QR codes can be installed only once. Restart the phone, confirm the selected data line and check the APN instructions first.
05Coverage and speed expectations
Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka and major rail corridors generally have strong mobile coverage. Mountain valleys, remote islands and tunnels can interrupt any provider. Keep your hotel address, first-night route, train tickets and essential reservation codes available offline.
“Unlimited” rarely means unrestricted full-speed use forever. Read the fair-use policy for daily high-speed limits and the reduced speed after that limit.
