02Choose Kyoto Station for movement
Kyoto Station works when the itinerary includes several rail journeys. JR trains, the subway, buses and airport connections meet here. It is also easier for late arrivals when navigating with luggage.
The trade-off is atmosphere: the station area is urban and practical. You will commute to Gion, northern temples and parts of Arashiyama.
03Choose Gion for place
Gion and nearby Higashiyama reward travelers who walk early and late. Kiyomizudera, Yasaka Shrine, Kenninji and the lanes around Shirakawa feel different before tour groups arrive and after day visitors leave.
The trade-off is transport. Buses can be crowded, taxis add cost, and some properties sit on narrow streets where luggage delivery is more comfortable than rolling suitcases.
04A useful split-stay rule
Do not change hotels merely to sample two neighborhoods on a three-night visit; the lost check-in time rarely pays back. A split can make sense on a longer stay if the first half contains day trips and the second half is slow Kyoto sightseeing.
