01Is Nara worth a day trip?
Yes. Nara was Japan's first permanent capital (8th century) and keeps more UNESCO World Heritage buildings in one walkable park than anywhere else in Japan. Add 1,200 sacred deer that bow for crackers, and it is the single most memorable half-day you can attach to a Kyoto or Osaka stay. Five hours on the ground is enough; a full day lets you add Naramachi's machiya streets.

Which station?
Kintetsu-Nara puts you 5 minutes from the park; JR Nara adds a 15–20 minute walk. If you are not using a JR Pass, take Kintetsu.
03The classic Nara walking route (5–6 hours)
- Kintetsu-Nara station → Kofukuji temple (15 min). Five-story pagoda, your first deer.
- Nara Park. Buy deer crackers (shika senbei, a few hundred yen) from street vendors — hold them high and the deer bow. Feed with flat palms; they nibble anything that dangles, maps included.
- Todaiji temple (60–90 min). The Daibutsuden hall houses the 15-meter bronze Great Buddha. Entry ¥800 (adults). Find the pillar with a hole said to match the Buddha's nostril — crawling through brings luck.
- Nigatsudo hall (free). Uphill 10 minutes; the best terrace view over Nara, usually quiet.
- Kasuga Taisha shrine. Approach through forest paths lined with 3,000 stone and bronze lanterns.
- Naramachi (optional). Preserved merchant townhouses, craft shops, and the theatrical high-speed mochi pounding at Nakatani-do.
04Kyoto or Osaka as a base?
Either works; Kyoto is 10 minutes faster by Kintetsu and pairs naturally with a Fushimi Inari stop on the same line's JR alternative. From Osaka, Namba's Kintetsu rapid express is direct and cheap. How long do you need in Nara?
Five to six hours covers the classic route: Kofukuji, deer feeding in Nara Park, Todaiji's Great Buddha, Nigatsudo and Kasuga Taisha. Add two more hours for Naramachi or the Nara National Museum.
Is Nara Park free?
Yes — the park and its deer are free. You pay only for temple interiors: ¥800 for Todaiji's Daibutsuden, similar fees at Kofukuji's halls and Kasuga Taisha's inner area, and a few hundred yen for deer crackers.
Are the Nara deer dangerous?
They are wild but habituated. They can headbutt or nip when teased or when crackers are hidden; feed with open palms, don't tease, and keep paper out of reach. Does with fawns (May–July) and stags in autumn rut deserve extra distance.
Kintetsu or JR from Kyoto?
Kintetsu is faster (35 min express) and arrives closer to the park. Choose JR's ¥720 Miyakoji rapid only if you hold a JR Pass or want to combine Nara with Fushimi Inari and Uji on the same JR line.
Can you do Nara and Fushimi Inari in one day?
Yes — do Fushimi Inari at sunrise (it never closes), take the JR Nara line south by 10:00, and spend the afternoon in Nara. It is a long but popular combination.
Is Nara better than Kyoto?
They complement rather than compete: Kyoto has depth and variety for days; Nara concentrates its wonders into one park. On a first trip, treat Nara as Kyoto's essential half-day extension.
